Murdoch, (Keith) Rupert 1931 - . Australian-born US media magnate with worldwide interests. His UK newspapers, generally right-wing, include the Sun, the News of the World, and The Times; in the USA, he has a 50% share of 20th Century Fox, six Metromedia TV stations, and newspaper and magazine publishing companies. He purchased a 50% stake in a Hungarian tabloid, Reform, from 1989. His newspapers (which also include Today and the Sunday Times) and 50% of Sky Television, the UK's first satellite television service, are controlled by News International, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian-based News Corporation. In Nov 1990 Sky Television and its rival company British Satellite Broadcasting merged to form British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). Over 70% of newspapers sold in Australia are controlled by Murdoch.
